For a seasonal dairy, breeding season is the year’s hinge point. For a seasonal dairy to work, all the cows must calve within a 60 day period… which means breeding season is two months of intense hard work as we make sure all the cows get bred — and as many as possible get pregnant! — in a very brief time span. Once it’s over, there’s nothing we can do but sit back and wait for the pregnancy test results.
Well, this year’s test results are in, and they are very good! Of the 105 cows that were tested, 101 are officially pregnant. Add in the heifers who aren’t yet in the herd, and we are on track for 156 calves next spring. Thanks to the hard work and vigilance of the farm crew, we have a very busy 2016 to look forward to!
